In this episode, Heidi and her friend, Peter, venture into the forest to collect berries for Heidi's aunt Dete. The forest is said to be home to a big, bad wolf, and the children are warned to stay away from it. However, Heidi is eager to find out if the stories are true and insists on continuing deeper into the forest.
As they search for berries, the children stumble upon an old cabin. Inside, they find a man who introduces himself as Joseph. Joseph is a kind man who is living alone in the woods after his wife passed away. The children take a liking to him and enjoy the stories he tells them. However, Joseph becomes concerned when he hears the children were warned about the wolf. He warns them to be careful and gives them a bell to ring if they encounter the beast.
Later on, Peter's goats run off into the woods, and he sets out to retrieve them. Heidi joins him, and they soon find the goats cornered by the wolf. They ring the bell Joseph gave them, and Joseph hears it and rushes to their aid. He manages to scare away the wolf, and the children are safe.
When they return to the village, Heidi tells her grandfather about the kind man they met in the woods. It turns out that Joseph was a well-known painter who had disappeared years ago. With the help of the village, they locate Joseph's home and return the paintings he left behind to his family.
