Brendon, Melissa, and Jason are back for another season of their homemade movies, but things are changing. In "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," the second episode of season three, Brendon's parents, Paula and Andrew, are getting a divorce.
At first, Brendon is optimistic about the split, thinking that it might be "cool" to have two houses and two Christmases. But as the reality sinks in, he begins to worry about how the divorce will affect his family and his own relationships. Meanwhile, Paula is trying to find a new apartment and Andrew is struggling to adjust to life on his own.
In typical Home Movies fashion, the episode balances the heavy subject matter with plenty of humor. Melissa and Jason try to distract Brendon with their own drama over a make-believe breakup, which leads to some hilarious scenes of them pretending to cry and call each other on toy phones. The trio also embarks on a misguided plan to get Paula and Andrew back together, involving a surprise dinner party and a poorly thought-out skit.
Throughout the episode, Brendon grapples with his own feelings about the divorce, looking to his dad's new girlfriend Linda for guidance. Linda is portrayed as a free-spirited hippie, but her advice to Brendon about letting go of his expectations and accepting change is surprisingly poignant.
"Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" is a standout episode of Home Movies, deftly handling a difficult subject while staying true to the show's quirky humor and heartfelt moments. Fans of the series will appreciate seeing how the characters navigate this major life event, and newcomers will be drawn in by the witty writing and charming animation.
