Brendon, Melissa, and Jason are back with another season of their homemade movies. In season 3, episode 3 titled "Bad Influences," we see our favorite kid filmmakers dealing with the usual challenges of adolescence while trying to make their latest movie.
The episode begins with Brendon and Jason trying to come up with an idea for their new film. They decide to make a post-apocalyptic movie set in a world where everyone has lost their sense of humor. Melissa joins in on the brainstorming, but she seems more interested in exploring her newfound fascination with being edgy and rebellious.
As the trio begins filming their post-apocalyptic movie, they run into a group of older kids who take an interest in their work. Initially flattered by the older kids' attention, Brendon, Melissa, and Jason soon realize that their new friends are nothing but bad influences. The older kids make them take risks and do things they wouldn't normally do, like sneaking into a club to see a band play.
Meanwhile, Coach McGuirk, the boys' soccer coach and occasional mentor, is trying to get his life together. His attempts to buy a new car and reconnect with an ex-girlfriend all fail miserably, leaving him feeling even more lost and hopeless than before.
Back on set, tensions are rising as Brendon, Melissa, and Jason's new friends begin to take over their movie. The older kids insist on using their own music and making changes to the script, leading to some serious creative differences between them and our young filmmakers. As the tension builds, Melissa becomes increasingly rebellious, even going so far as to dye her hair blue and get a tattoo.
Through all the turmoil, the young filmmakers are forced to confront some hard truths about themselves and the people around them. They realize that while it's important to take risks and try new things, it's just as important to stay true to yourself and your creative vision.
In the end, Brendon, Melissa, and Jason manage to finish their movie, but it's not the post-apocalyptic epic they had envisioned. It's a weird and disjointed mess of genres and styles, but it's uniquely theirs. As they look back on the experience, they realize that the most important thing was the journey, not the destination. They learned a lot about themselves, each other, and what it means to be a true artist.
Overall, "Bad Influences" is a hilarious, touching episode that explores the challenges of growing up, making art, and finding your place in the world. With its wry humor and relatable characters, Home Movies continues to be one of the most underrated and hilarious animated series of its time.
