Hozuki's Coolheadedness season 1 episode 3 is titled Hakutaku/How Their Discord Came to Be. The episode begins with Hozuki being visited by a creature named Hakutaku, who is a legendary beast with a human face and a cow's body. He has come to consult Hozuki about a peculiar problem: he has been tasked with writing a book about the history of Japan, but he doesn't know where to begin. Hozuki suggests he start with the story of the god Susanoo, who once caused chaos in the land of the gods.
The story then shifts to the land of the gods, where Susanoo is causing trouble. He throws a fit and destroys the crops, angering the other gods. Izanagi, the god of creation, decides that Susanoo must be punished, but he is too scared to confront him alone. So he sends his granddaughter Amaterasu, the sun goddess, to talk to Susanoo and try to bring him to his senses.
Amaterasu tries to reason with Susanoo, but he grows more and more agitated, eventually attacking her with a sword. She retreats to a cave, hiding from the violent and destructive Susanoo. The other gods become worried and try to think of a way to lure Susanoo away from the cave. They eventually come up with a plan to hold a party outside the cave, complete with sake and a large mirror.
When Susanoo sees his own reflection in the mirror, he becomes curious and approaches it. The gods quickly seal the entrance to the cave, trapping Susanoo inside. He eventually calms down and apologizes for his behavior, but the damage is done. Amaterasu is still afraid of him and refuses to leave the cave, causing more tension between the two.
Hakutaku is fascinated by this story, and Hozuki explains that it represents the discord that exists between siblings and how it can lead to a lasting rift. He reveals that he has a brother as well, but they do not get along. This prompts Hakutaku to share his own story of family drama.
As a child, Hakutaku was always told that he was special and destined for great things. But when his younger brother was born, his parents showered him with attention and ignored Hakutaku. This caused him to become bitter and resentful towards his brother. One day, his brother fell ill and seemed close to death. Hakutaku realized how foolish and selfish his actions had been, and he begged the gods to spare his brother's life. In return, he vowed to become a healer and use his powers for good.
The episode ends with Hozuki and Hakutaku discussing the importance of family and forgiveness. They both agree that it's never too late to make amends and that one must always try to see things from another's perspective.
