Oreki Houtarou has been dragged into joining the Classic Literature Club by his enthusiastic friend, Satoshi Fukube. Upon arriving at the clubroom, Oreki meets Eru Chitanda, the club's beautiful and curious president. After some awkward introductions, the club members begin discussing their activities for the year. It quickly becomes apparent that the Classic Literature Club is not very active, with most of the members either absent or uninterested in participating. Eru, however, is determined to change that. She suggests that the club produce a cultural festival display on the theme of literature, which sparks interest in some of the members. As the club members begin brainstorming ideas for their display, Oreki observes Satoshi's ability to come up with clever ideas and Eru's eagerness to learn. He realizes that, despite his initial reluctance to join the club, he may find some enjoyment in their activities after all. As the meeting comes to a close, Eru asks Oreki to accompany her on a quest to discover the true purpose behind the club's name, the Classics Club. Oreki begrudgingly agrees, and the two set out to uncover the club's mystery. Overall, episode 2 of HYOUKA sets up the premise for the show's central mystery and establishes the characters' dynamics. It also explores the theme of finding enjoyment in unexpected places and the power of curiosity.
