Hyouka is an anime that tells the story of a high school boy named Oreki Houtarou. In this particular episode, episode 6 of season 1, titled "Committing a Cardinal Sin," Oreki is on a mission to uncover the truth behind a mystery that occurred twenty years ago.
The episode begins with the class being interrupted by a loud noise. Oreki and his friends, Satoshi, Mayaka, and Eru, go to investigate and find out that the noise came from a storage room, where they discover old film reels and a projector. They soon learn that the film reels date back twenty years and belong to the Classics club, which was active at their school at that time.
Curious about the contents of the film reels, the group decides to watch them. At first, the replayed scenes of the Classics club members at work seem mundane and uneventful. That changes, however, when they notice that one of the members, Fukube, is acting strange during the replay.
Intrigued, Oreki decides to investigate further and reaches out to Fukube to learn more about what was happening in the footage. Fukube, however, insists that he does not remember much of that time and only that he committed a cardinal sin.
Unsatisfied with that answer, Oreki and his friends continue to look for clues and examine the footage in more detail. As they do so, they come across something strange - in one of the shots, they can see the reflection of someone who was not present when the footage was recorded.
Armed with this new information, Oreki and Fukube revisit the Classics club's former room to try and solve the mystery. There, they notice an old photo album belonging to the Classics club. Upon inspection, they realize that the strange reflection they saw in the footage was actually a member of the club who was absent from the room at the time of filming.
With this new information, they piece together the mystery. It was revealed that the Classics club was planning to disband, and the absent member was the reason why. In an effort to prevent the club from disbanding, they decided to fake evidence to scare the absent member into thinking that the room was haunted.
In the end, Oreki and his friends learn the truth behind the mystery and resolve the issue between the Classics club members. Throughout the episode, the characters learn more about themselves, their values, and the importance of honesty and transparency in interpersonal relationships.
Overall, "Committing a Cardinal Sin" is an engaging episode that showcases the show's ability to weave mystery and character development into a compelling narrative. The episode serves as a reminder that sometimes, the biggest mysteries can be solved by simply looking at things with a fresh perspective.
