The Last Auction Hero is the twenty-first episode of the first season of the popular television comedy series, Instant Mom. The hit show follows the story of Stephanie Phillips (played by Tia Mowry-Hardrict), a former party girl who marries Charlie Phillips (played by Michael Boatman), a successful Seattle-based IT technician. As a result of this marriage, Stephanie adopts Charlie's three children and has to make major life changes, embracing motherhood full-time.
In The Last Auction Hero episode, Stephanie has decided to get rid of all the old and unused items in the house and throw them into a garage sale. When she tries to sell one of the kids' old toys, Charlie once again becomes nostalgic and persuades Stephanie to keep the toy and instead authenticate it on an auction site. Stephanie does not believe it will sell, but the toy ends up getting the most bids and sells for thousands of dollars.
Excited by the money they made, Charlie suggests they do some hunting around the house to find more eBay-worthy items, and the family discovers that they have a lot of valuable things lying around, including a vase Charlie had given Steph before they were married. Stephanie is torn between Charlie's sentimentality and the reality that they could both profit greatly from selling these belongings.
The situation becomes even more complicated when Stephanie's best friend, Aaron (played by Sydney Park), comes over to help and ends up wanting to bid on the items up for auction. There is some reluctance as Aaron is still a child, but Charlie allows it with a promise that Aaron will honor the items and treat them with respect and care.
Meanwhile, the younger kids, Gabby (played by Kali Rocha) and James (played by Tylen Jacob Williams), are trying to deal with the news that their father, Max, is getting married again. Gabby is having a hard time accepting Max's new woman, while James is concerned about how his dad's new family will affect him and his siblings. Stephanie and Charlie try their best to counsel the children through these complex emotions, but the situation becomes increasingly complicated as when Gabby decides to take things into her own hands and sabotage her father's wedding plans.
The Last Auction Hero is an emotional, funny, and engaging episode that demonstrates the complex and interwoven strands of family life. The family's relationship with their belongings is expertly woven into the plot, raising intriguing questions about the relationship between people, memories, and the things we hold onto. While Steph and Charlie may have different perspectives on what to do with their belongings, in the end, they both discover the importance of being honest with each other, facing their emotions, and staying true to their family's values.
