Instant Mom is a family sitcom that follows the life of Stephanie Phillips, a former party girl who becomes an instant mother when she marries Charlie, a man with three children. In season 1 episode 23, entitled "Should Old Acquaintance Be For Hire," Stephanie's friend Shelly visits and reveals that she's in financial trouble. Stephanie decides to help her out by hiring her as her personal assistant, but soon finds out that she may have made a mistake.
The episode begins with Stephanie, Charlie and the kids preparing for Shelly's visit. Shelly is Stephanie's old friend from her partying days, and the two of them used to get into all sorts of trouble together. When Shelly arrives, Stephanie is happy to see her, but it's clear that things have changed between them. Stephanie is now a responsible mother and wife, while Shelly is still living the wild life.
The next day, after dropping the kids off at school, Stephanie discovers that Shelly is in financial trouble. She's months behind on her rent and her car has been repossessed. Stephanie wants to help her out, but she's not sure how. When Shelly offers to be her personal assistant, Stephanie jumps at the opportunity.
Shelly quickly proves to be a terrible assistant. She's disorganized, forgetful, and not at all focused on the job. Stephanie tries to be patient, but it's clear that Shelly is more interested in having fun than getting work done. When Stephanie confronts her about it, Shelly explains that she's not used to the responsibility and she's having trouble adjusting to this new lifestyle.
Stephanie decides to give her friend another chance, but things continue to go wrong. Shelly forgets to pick up the kids from school, misplaces important documents, and even causes a fire in the kitchen. Stephanie is forced to let her go, but she doesn't want to hurt her friend's feelings.
Meanwhile, Gabby, Stephanie's youngest stepdaughter, is struggling with a school project. She's supposed to create a family tree, but she can't seem to find any information about her biological mother. Stephanie encourages her to keep looking, but Gabby is starting to lose hope. When Charlie finds out, he decides to take matters into his own hands and surprises Gabby with a special gift.
In the end, Stephanie realizes that she can't help Shelly with her problems. As much as she wants to be a good friend, she also has a family to take care of. She sits down with Shelly and explains that she can't continue to be her personal assistant. Shelly is disappointed, but understands that Stephanie has to put her family first.
Overall, "Should Old Acquaintance Be For Hire" is a heartwarming episode about the challenges of balancing friendship and family. It's a reminder that sometimes, even the best intentions can have unintended consequences. Even though Stephanie's effort to help her friend didn't work out as planned, she learned an important lesson about boundaries and priorities.
