Kagome has been transported back to the Sengoku period, where she meets the half-demon Inuyasha. As she tries to return to her own time, Kagome learns of the powerful jewel shards that can grant immense power. In episode three, "Back Home Through the Bone-Eater's Well," Kagome attempts to go back home through the well that brought her to the past. However, she is stopped by a centipede demon that emerges from the well.

Inuyasha appears and helps Kagome defeat the demon, but in the process, a jewel shard is embedded in the demon's body. The shard's power enhances the demon and causes it to grow in size and strength, making it nearly invincible. Inuyasha and Kagome flee, a move which brings them to an old woman's hut.

The old woman, Kaede, is the younger sister of Kikyo, a priestess who was Inuyasha's love interest 50 years ago. Kagome learns that Kikyo was also the protector of the Jewel of Four Souls, the source of the jewel shards. During a battle with Inuyasha, Kikyo was fatally wounded, and the jewel was burned along with her body.

Kagome realizes that the shard inside the centipede is one of the fragmented pieces of the jewel. She communicates with Kaede and Inuyasha to formulate a plan to retrieve the shard. They use a special powder to blind the demon, making it easier to attack. In the end, they are able to retrieve the shard, but not before Inuyasha reveals his vulnerable side, which Kagome comically exploits.

The episode concludes with Kagome attempting to travel back through the well to her own era. Inuyasha follows, and both emerge in the Higurashi family's shrine. To Kagome's surprise, the ever-loyal Inuyasha follows her into the modern world, much to her family's shock and amusement.

"Back Home Through the Bone-Eater's Well" sets the stage for the overall theme of the series, which is the continued search for the jewel shards. It also introduces the secondary quest of Inuyasha's love for Kikyo and his relationship with Kagome.
