Judge Judy Season 1 Episode 136 Cactus custody; separated pair.

  • March 26, 1997

In this episode of Judge Judy titled "Cactus Custody; Separated Pair," the courtroom is packed with people waiting to hear about an unusual case. A couple who has been separated for over a year comes before Judge Judy to settle a dispute regarding the custody of their prized collection of cacti.

The man claims that the cacti were a shared hobby and should be evenly distributed between them. However, the woman believes that since she took care of the plants after their separation, she should be the one to keep them all.

Before Judge Judy can proceed with the case, she needs to establish the value of the cacti. The couple is quick to point out the rarity and uniqueness of their collection, but they are unable to provide any receipts or documentation. Judge Judy orders them to bring in an appraiser who can evaluate the worth of the plants.

In the meantime, the couple's personal issues start to spill out in the courtroom. The man accuses the woman of keeping him from seeing their children, while she claims that he was unfaithful during their marriage and is not a good father. Judge Judy shuts down their emotional outbursts and reminds them that they are in court to settle a matter of property, not parenting.

When the appraiser finally arrives, he is surprised at the quality of the plants. He informs Judge Judy that the collection is worth a small fortune and suggests selling them and splitting the profits between the couple. The man readily agrees, but the woman is reluctant to let go of the cacti she has been caring for.

Judge Judy listens to both sides and ultimately decides to award the collection to the man. She reasons that since the cacti were a shared hobby, he should be able to enjoy them as well. However, she warns him not to sell the plants without the woman's permission.

The episode ends with Judge Judy admonishing the couple for their behavior in court and urging them to focus on their children's well-being in the future, rather than their own personal grudges.
