Latino Americans is a six-part documentary series that chronicles the rich and varied history of Latino Americans, who have helped shape the United States over the past five centuries. The series explores the complex and often painful journey of Latinos in America, from the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century to today.

In episode two, entitled "Empire of Dreams," the focus is on the post-World War II era, when millions of Latinos migrated to the United States seeking economic opportunity and political stability. The episode examines the challenges and triumphs that these immigrants faced as they struggled to establish themselves in a new country.

The episode begins with a look at the life of Cuban-American businessman Emilio Estefan, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most successful music producers in the world. Through interviews with Estefan and his wife, Gloria, the episode explores how their music helped to break down cultural barriers and promote understanding between Latinos and non-Latinos.

Next, the episode turns its attention to the struggles faced by Mexican-American farm workers in the 1950s and 1960s. Through archival footage and interviews with scholars and activists, we learn about the efforts of labor leader Cesar Chavez to organize these workers and fight for better wages and working conditions.

The episode then shifts its focus to the Puerto Rican community in New York City, which grew dramatically in the postwar years. Through interviews with Puerto Rican activists and politicians, we learn about the challenges faced by this community, including poverty, discrimination, and police brutality. We also learn how the Puerto Rican community fought back against these injustices, organizing protests and demanding greater political representation.

Finally, the episode explores the impact of the civil rights movement on the Latino community. Through interviews with activists and scholars, we learn how the struggle for civil rights intersected with the struggle for Latino rights, as Latinos joined African Americans in fighting for greater equality and justice. We also learn about the rise of Latino politicians, including Ed Roybal, the first Latino elected to the U.S. Congress from California.

Throughout the episode, we are reminded of the richness and diversity of Latino culture, as well as the challenges and triumphs that have marked the Latino experience in the United States. Through the stories of individuals like Emilio Estefan, Cesar Chavez, and Ed Roybal, we see the power of individual action to effect change, as well as the importance of collective struggle in achieving social justice for all.
