Latino Americans is a documentary series that explores the history, culture, and contributions of Latino Americans in the United States. In season 1, episode 1, titled "Foreigners in Their Own Land," viewers are taken on a journey through the earliest days of Spanish colonization in the Americas to the present day struggles and achievements of Latino Americans.

The episode begins with the story of Juan Seguín, a Tejano who fought alongside Texans in the battle for independence from Mexico in 1836, only to be later labeled a traitor by those same Texans. This serves as an introduction to the complex history and identity of Latino Americans, who have often existed in a space between two worlds - not fully accepted by white Americans, nor fully embraced by their Latin American roots.

Viewers are then introduced to a series of experts, scholars, and activists who provide context and insight into the experiences of Latino Americans. Through interviews and historical footage, we learn about the various waves of Latino migration to the United States, from the bracero program of the 1940s to the Cuban refugee crisis of the 1980s.

We also see how Latino Americans have contributed to American culture and society, from Cesar Chavez and the labor movement to Latino Hollywood icons like Rita Moreno and Edward James Olmos. However, we also see how they have faced discrimination and struggle for equality, as exemplified by the 1968 walkouts of Chicano students in Los Angeles fighting for better education.

Throughout the episode, a central theme emerges - the idea of Latino Americans as "foreigners in their own land." Despite being a vital part of American history and culture, Latinos have often been relegated to the margins of society. From the Spanish language being banned in schools to present-day immigration policies, Latino Americans have faced many challenges and barriers to full inclusion in American life.

Despite these struggles, the episode ends on a hopeful note. We see Latino Americans organizing and fighting for their rights, as well as a growing awareness and appreciation of Latino culture and contributions among the wider American public. The episode serves as a powerful introduction to the series and an important reminder of the vital role that Latino Americans have played - and continue to play - in shaping the United States.
