Lidia Celebrates America is a heartwarming and informative docuseries where popular Italian-American chef Lidia Bastianich discovers and shares with her viewers the diverse and rich culinary and cultural traditions of America and its people. In season 1, episode 1, titled "Holiday Tables and Traditions," Lidia explores the meaning and significance of holidays and festive gatherings in various American households and communities.

The episode begins with Lidia flying from her home in New York to Hawaii, where she joins a multi-generational Japanese-American family for their traditional Osechi Ryori New Year's feast. Lidia learns from the family members about the symbolic meaning of each dish and the importance of preserving their heritage through food. She also tries her hand at making mochi and hears heartfelt stories of how the family dealt with discrimination and internment during World War II.

Next, Lidia travels to a Navajo reservation in Arizona, where she attends a winter solstice party hosted by a local family. Lidia learns about the Navajo creation story and the role of traditions and ceremonies in connecting the people to their land and spirits. She helps to prepare mutton stew and frybread, which are staples of Navajo cuisine, and listens to the family's stories of resilience and survival in a harsh environment.

From the arid desert, Lidia heads to the snowy Midwest, where she visits a German-American family in Wisconsin for their Christmas Eve celebration. Lidia discovers the origin of the tradition of Christmas trees and ornaments and learns how Germans brought their cuisine to America. She participates in making traditional dishes, such as sauerbraten, spaetzle, and stollen, and joins the family in singing carols and exchanging gifts by the fireplace.

Finally, Lidia returns to her own Italian-American roots in New York, where she and her mother and children prepare for their annual Christmas Eve dinner, also known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Lidia explains the religious and cultural significance of this tradition, which involves abstaining from meat during Advent and eating seafood-based dishes on Christmas Eve. She shares recipes for baccala, octopus salad, and spaghetti with clams, and highlights the role of food in bringing families together and creating memories.

Throughout the episode, Lidia showcases her signature warmth, curiosity, and respect for the people she meets and the customs she experiences. She also highlights the diversity and creativity of American cuisine and the power of food to connect people across generations and cultures. The episode ends with Lidia reflecting on the common threads that unite all these different holiday tables and traditions: love, generosity, and a shared sense of gratitude for life's blessings.
