Lidia Celebrates America is a show that explores the diversity of American cuisine and culture through the eyes of chef and restauranteur Lidia Bastianich. In the second season, Lidia Celebrates America explores the holiday traditions of immigrant communities in the United States. In the first episode of this season, called Home for the Holidays, Lidia travels to five different cities to learn about the unique ways in which these communities celebrate the holidays.
The episode begins in Dearborn, Michigan, where Lidia visits the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the United States. Lidia also learns how to make tamales, a staple of Mexican American cuisine, and attends a musical performance by the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
In New York City, Lidia explores the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah with a group of Orthodox Jewish families in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. She learns how to make traditional dishes like latkes and brisket, and attends a candle-lighting ceremony at a local synagogue. Lidia also talks to a young Jewish woman who is a rapper, and explores the intersection of Jewish culture with hip-hop.
The episode then takes Lidia to a Vietnamese American community in New Orleans, where she learns about the celebration of Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. She attends a traditional dragon dance performance, and learns how to make a variety of Vietnamese dishes, including banh chung, a sticky rice cake wrapped in banana leaves. Lidia also talks to a young Vietnamese American woman who is a chef, and explores the ways in which Vietnamese American cuisine has evolved over time.
Finally, Lidia travels to a Greek American community in Boston to experience the celebration of Greek Orthodox Easter. She attends a midnight mass at a local church, where she learns about the symbolism of the Easter candles and the red eggs that are traditionally given as gifts. Lidia also learns how to make traditional Greek dishes like moussaka and spanakopita, and attends a lively Greek dance party with members of the community.
Throughout the episode, Lidia celebrates the richness and diversity of American culture, and shows how the traditions of different immigrant communities have contributed to the fabric of American life. She also explores the ways in which food and music play a central role in these communities' holiday celebrations, bringing people together and creating a sense of shared identity and belonging.
