Elizabeth McCord, a retired CIA analyst, now works as a Secretary of State for the United States government under the administration of President Conrad Dalton. She is an accomplished woman, smart and level-headed, with a keen sense of diplomacy and a deep commitment to doing what is right for her country and the world at large. In the seventh episode of the series, titled "Passage," Elizabeth must confront a difficult issue that threatens to derail a crucial agreement between the US government and a French diplomat.

The episode begins with a series of flashbacks to Elizabeth's time as a CIA analyst, working undercover in Iran. She and her team were tasked with extracting a valuable asset from the country, but things went wrong, and one of their team members was killed. Elizabeth has been carrying the weight of that failure with her ever since, and in the present day, she is forced to confront it head-on when the French diplomat, Philippe, asks her to intervene on behalf of a young woman who is in danger of being deported from the US back to Iran.

The young woman, Azar Nafisi, is a writer who has been living in the US as a refugee for several years. She has been working with Philippe on a project to promote peace and understanding between Iran and the Western world, but now her visa has expired, and she is facing deportation. Philippe believes that Elizabeth can help convince the US government to grant Azar asylum, but Elizabeth is hesitant to get involved. She knows that the situation is complicated and that getting involved could put her and the US government in a difficult position.

Despite her reservations, Elizabeth agrees to meet with Azar and hear her story. She quickly realizes that Azar's situation is more complicated than she initially thought. Azar's father was a high-ranking government official in Iran, and her family was targeted by the regime for their political beliefs. Azar fears that if she is forced to return to Iran, she will face imprisonment or worse. Elizabeth is torn between her duty to uphold the law and her desire to help someone in need. She turns to her staff for advice and ultimately decides to take a risk and intervene on Azar's behalf.

Elizabeth's actions have consequences, however. Her decision to help Azar puts her at odds with the US government and could potentially damage the fragile relationship between the US and France. Despite the risks, Elizabeth remains committed to doing what is right, even if it means going against protocol and putting her own career on the line.

As the episode comes to a close, we see Elizabeth grapple with the weight of her decision. She knows that her actions could have serious repercussions, but she also knows that she did the right thing. In the end, Elizabeth's commitment to doing what is right, even when it's difficult, is what makes her such a compelling character and Madam Secretary such a powerful show.
