In episode 8 of Marriage Boot Camp season 16, titled “Hip Hop Edition: Scarred Pasts,” the couples begin to delve deeper into their past traumas that may be affecting their current relationships. The episode opens with a group therapy session led by Dr. Ish and Judge Toler, where the couples discuss the various ways they have been hurt in the past and how it has impacted their relationships.
Later, the couples participate in a trust exercise where they must guide each other blindfolded through a maze. As tensions rise and communication breaks down, the exercise proves to be a real test of the couples’ ability to work together and trust each other.
Throughout the episode, we see each couple confront their own individual issues. Rapper Tahiry opens up about her past experiences with physical and emotional abuse, which have left her with trust issues in her relationship with Vado. Meanwhile, Phaedra and Medina come to terms with the fact that their long-distance relationship has been holding them back from truly connecting with each other.
As always, the couple’s personal issues spill over into their group interactions, causing drama and conflict. In one scene, Vado and Tahiry have a heated argument that prompts Dr. Ish to intervene. And later, Willie and Shanda confront Kurupt about his drinking, ultimately leading Kurupt to confront his own demons.
By the end of the episode, all six of the couples are forced to confront their own “scarred pasts” and begin to work through their issues in order to move forward as a couple. While it’s clear that the road ahead will not be easy, the couples are committed to working through their issues and coming out stronger on the other side.
