Mary Kills People is a thrilling Canadian television series that originally aired in 2017 on Global. This show follows the story of Dr. Mary Harris who, along with her colleague Des Bennett, end the lives of terminally ill patients who have requested their assistance in dying. Mary is a retired ER doctor who leads a double life as an angel of mercy, providing those who want to end their suffering with a way out. My company made sure to catch every episode of this three-season series, and I must say that the show's strong dialogue, sharp characterization, and somber setting drew us in from start to finish.

The show is set in the vibrant city of Toronto and revolves around Mary's life after she leaves her job at the hospital. She starts running an underground euthanasia service to help those seeking a peaceful death. Mary is continually faced with the moral dilemma of whether she is helping her patients or merely carrying out their last wishes. Her actions are complicated by both the questionable legality of her actions and the chilling fear of being caught by the authorities.

Caroline Dhavernas plays the character of Mary Harris with exceptional finesse. She portrays Mary as a character that is kind, empathetic, but also flawed. Mary's character's development is one of the shows' highlights, and Dhavernas portrays her character's growth with impeccable finesse. Throughout the show, we see Mary becoming more confident and determined to help her patients, and the actress shines in every scene.

Jay Ryan plays the character of Ben Wesley, a police detective who is investigating Mary's illegal euthanasia practice. Ryan's acting adds suspense to the show, and his interactions with Mary are some of the highlights of the series. Richard Short plays the role of Mary's partner and colleague Des Bennett. His character is more practical than Mary and provides her with the lethal drugs that Mary uses to carry out the euthanasia. Short manages to portray the character’s multifaceted character with effortless ease.

Mary Kills People's storyline is dark and complex, dealing with issues around assisted death and moral responsibility. However, it is the show's ability to explore themes like mortality, ethics, and morality without being overly didactic that makes it so compelling. The storylines are realistic and often leave viewers questioning what they would do in similar situations.

The show's cinematography and music also play crucial roles in Mary Kills People's overall quality. The camera work is fantastic, managing to capture both the beauty of the city and the bleakness of the characters' situations. The soundtrack is also evocative, often setting the tone for scenes and adding depth to the show's emotional moments.

In conclusion, Mary Kills People is a beautifully crafted series with excellent acting, cinematography, and music that explore several thought-provoking and controversial themes. The show walks a fine line between entertainment and ethical considerations, and the balance is precisely what makes it so unique. My team and I were disappointed when the series wrapped in 2019, but we all agreed it was a fantastic experience, and we look forward to seeing Caroline Dhavernas and the rest of the cast in their next endeavors.
