Ep 6. Spirit of the South

In Master Distiller season 2 episode 6 entitled "Spirit of the South," the remaining three distillers must create a characterful whiskey that embodies the essence of the south. The group receives a surprise visit from two local experts, who provide insight into the styles and flavors of whiskey that are most popular in the region. The contestants take this knowledge and get to work creating their unique take on a southern whiskey.

Each distiller has their own spin on what makes a great southern whiskey. One distiller chooses a high-rye bourbon recipe that takes inspiration from the characteristic spicy flavors of southern cuisine. His approach is to create a versatile whiskey that can be enjoyed straight or in classic cocktails like the whiskey sour. Another distiller chooses a mix of aged and new whiskey, aiming to capture the sultry, smooth flavors that are a signature of southern hospitality. She hopes her final blend will be a whiskey that can be sipped comfortably on a porch swing, savored in the company of good friends.

Finally, the third distiller takes a more innovative approach, choosing to use non-traditional ingredients in his whiskey. His recipe includes a blend of corn, barley, and a touch of smoked malt, which he believes will give a unique smoky flavor that's rarely seen in southern-style whiskeys. To further stand out, he also chooses to age his whiskey in casks that were previously used to age a popular local wine, hoping to impart some unique regional characteristics to his final product.

As the distillers work on their whiskey, tensions begin to rise as they realize that they are playing for a chance at the final two. In order to get there, they will need to make a whiskey that truly captures the judges' attention and impresses them with its southern flair. With just a few precious hours left, each distiller adds finishing touches to their whiskey, hoping that they've done enough to earn a spot in the final round.

When it comes time for the final tasting, each distiller presents their unique whiskey to the judges. Their spirits are sampled, discussed, and analyzed in great detail, as the judges look for the perfect balance of flavor, texture, and complexity. Finally, the verdict is in, and one distiller is sent home while the other two move on to the final round.

In the end, only one distiller will be crowned the Master Distiller of season 2. But all three have proven that they have the creativity and skill to create truly unique and delicious whiskeys, each with their own take on what the "Spirit of the South" really means. Whether it's a spicy, versatile bourbon, a sultry and smooth aged whiskey, or an innovative smoked malt blend, each distiller has brought something special to the table, and the judges have taken note.
