Ep 3. It's a Man's World

Facing constant discrimination from their own men, Gypsy women must work hard to keep their traditions alive while also breaking free from their male-dominated culture. This episode of My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding follows four brave women as they attempt to fight for gender equality and independence in the face of their families' disapproval.

In the first story, we meet Nettie, a young Gypsy woman who is fed up with her father's controlling behavior. Despite being married with children, Nettie dreams of earning her own money and traveling the world, something that her father vehemently opposes. As she struggles to balance her family's expectations with her own desires, Nettie must find a way to assert her independence and show her father that she is more than just a wife and mother.

Next, we meet Lizzie, a 19-year-old bride-to-be who is determined to break free from Gypsy traditions and have a wedding that reflects her own tastes and style. However, Lizzie's groom, Billy Joe, is reluctant to give up his own traditions, causing tension between the couple and their families. Lizzie must navigate the delicate balance between her own desires and her husband's expectations while also working to gain the acceptance of her conservative Gypsy community.

In the third story, we follow Lexi, a young Gypsy woman who has always been fascinated by cars. When she meets Michael, an African American mechanic, they fall in love and decide to get married despite their families' objections. As they plan their non-traditional wedding, Lexi must deal with the backlash from her family and try to convince them that love knows no color or culture.

Finally, we meet Heather and her grandmother, who are both fed up with the way that Gypsy men treat their women. Determined to create a change, Heather decides to start her own Gypsy women's rights group, much to the chagrin of her grandfather and the rest of the community. As she seeks to empower her fellow women and challenge the traditional roles of Gypsy women, Heather must grapple with the consequences of going against decades of tradition.

It's a Man's World is a powerful episode that showcases the struggles and triumphs of Gypsy women as they fight for their independence and identities. From Nettie's desire for freedom to Heather's call for social change, these women show that Gypsy culture is not static and that women can be agents of change in their own communities. As they navigate tradition and modernity, these women prove that there is no one right way to be a Gypsy woman.
