My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding
- 3 Seasons
My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding is a show currently airing on TLC. The show is a reality based program that follows gypsies as they prepare for weddings in their tradition. A typical show begins with a couple as they begin the planning for the wedding and traditionally end with the wedding itself. The show was originally developed in the United Kingdom, where the customs are prevalent. The show aims to educate individuals about the gypsies and their culture. The gypsies have specific terms and customs that most viewers will be unfamiliar with. Through the show, viewers will learn how the gypsies, or Romani (pronounced like rummy) as they call themselves, live alongside modern culture but traditionally consider themselves separate. They have a number of traditions pertaining to their weddings including dress selection, family approval of a wedding ceremony and who can make decisions for family members. For example, it is considered acceptable in Romani culture to become engaged as early as fourteen years old. Through the show, viewers are given a glimpse into the differences between mainstream and Romney and will learn about the unique challenges they face in trying to maintain their culture in a constantly evolving world. The show challenges most of the urban myths that surround modern gypsy culture providing the viewer with a more realistic view of a culture they might not be exposed to otherwise. The show aims to entertain as well as educate. Many of the situations the bride and groom encounter can be considered comical, but there are also serious and heart touching moments in the show where the Romani will encounter bias against their culture and roadblocks when they do not understand society's laws. In the end, couples will fight to ensure love conquers all.
