In the first episode of Nagi no Asukara, we are introduced to a world where humans and sea creatures coexist. The story follows a group of four middle school students named Hikari, Manaka, Chisaki, and Kaname who live in a underwater village called Shioshishio. The episode begins with Hikari, the protagonist, excitedly getting ready for the beginning of his school year. His younger sister Akari is also excited for the start of her school term on land.

The episode then shifts to the vibrantly colored world of Shioshishio, where we meet the rest of the main characters and the underwater village that they call home. The school term starts with a ceremony where the four friends participate, but things take an unexpected turn when their friend Miuna, who also attends the ceremony, is caught by the fishing net of a human boy. This event sets off a chain of events that change the lives of everyone in the village.

After the ceremony, the main characters are informed that their school is closing down and all the students are being transferred to a new school on land. Many of the residents of Shioshishio are not happy about the decision, as they believe it will put their way of life in danger. Hikari is especially adamant about not leaving the village, as he has always believed that the sea is the only place he truly belongs.

As the students adjust to their new school life on land, they face both cultural and personal challenges. Hikari struggles to adapt to a world that is so different from his own, and he becomes resentful of the humans who he feels do not understand or respect his way of life. Meanwhile, Manaka finds herself drawn to one of the human boys who helped rescue Miuna from the net.

The episode ends with a powerful scene where the main characters, having been ostracized by many of the human students, come together and affirm their commitment to each other and the sea life that they love. They vow to protect it at all costs, even if it means going against their classmates and the authorities.

Overall, "Between the Land and Sea" sets up an engaging story where the characters must navigate two worlds that are at odds with each other. The world-building is rich and immersive, with colorful visuals and an intricate mythology that adds depth to the narrative. The characters are well-rounded and likable, with distinct personalities and motivations that create an interesting dynamic between them. The episode does an excellent job of introducing viewers to the world of Nagi no Asukara and laying the foundation for the conflicts and themes that will be explored throughout the rest of the series.
