Gangkutsuou is a visually stunning anime television series based off of Alexandre Dumas' timeless novel The Count of Monte Cristo. The series takes place in the year 5053, depicting a fascinating dystopian universe not so different from ours, in which one man's pursuit for vengeance overshadows all. The show follows the enigmatic character of the Count through the eyes of bored, young viscount Albert de Morcerf, the son of the man who framed and falsely imprisoned the Count many years earlier. The show uses a distinctive layering style of animation to entice the viewer. Throughout the series, we come to discover the corruption, betrayal, and infidelity of those whom so long ago condemned the Count to suffer for their misdeeds; the actions of these antagonists make their impending punishment inflicted by the Count and his network that much more satisfying. But the Count is revealed to have compromised something precious in order to deliver revenge, and it slowly consumes him like an infection. Is his revenge worth the collateral damage it will cause to himself, and innocent bystanders like Albert?
