School Days is a 12-episode animated television show intended for mature audiences. It is based on a visual novel game, and it features themes of romance, love and abandonment. Despite a beginning which hints at a sweet school romance, School Days is a show that quickly veers towards darker themes. The story starts by following a young teenager named Makoto Ito. Makoto has recently moved with his largely absent mother to the fictional town of Haramihama, where he settles in easily despite not making many friends. During the first half of the school year, he notices a young girl who takes the train at the same time that he does. It turns out that Kotonoha Katsura is one of his classmates, and because of her shy nature and cute appearance, she is often bullied by the other students. She is quiet and studious, and at first Makoto is content to watch her from afar. Things change very quickly, however, when the bold and fiesty Sekai Saionji becomes his friend. She is a very vivid girl, as outgoing as Kotonoha is shy, and she helps Makoto approach Kotonoha. For the first episode, Sekai focuses her attention on getting Makoto and Kotonoha together, often with hilarious results. However, after some time, the two have made contact and are beginning to consider the possibility of dating. The primary conflict of the anime appears at the end of the first episode, however, when Sekai reveals that through her matchmaking efforts, she has also fallen in love with Makoto. The series concentrates on how the three students resolve these feelings, but far from being a standard love triangle, things become increasingly intense and violent. UK Anime Network described School Days as a dark subversion of the high school romance genre, calling it compelling though dark. There are also two longer Original Animated Videos centered on the characters from School Days, though the material is significantly lighter.
