In Nashville season 5 episode 1, titled "The Wayfaring Stranger," we are introduced to the aftermath of last season's shocking cliffhanger. Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) has survived the plane crash that left her fate unknown, but is left with physical and emotional scars that she must navigate. Meanwhile, Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) is dealing with the fallout of losing her label and embarking on a new career path.
The episode sets the stage for the season as we see Juliette struggle with feelings of guilt and self-doubt as she tries to come to terms with her near-death experience. She turns to a religious leader played by Cameron Scoggins for guidance, but it quickly becomes clear that the man may have ulterior motives. At the same time, Rayna is dealing with the harsh reality of the music industry as she tries to make a name for herself without the backing of a major label.
In addition to Juliette and Rayna's storylines, the episode also delves into the personal lives of other characters. Scarlett (Clare Bowen) is grappling with her newfound fame and trying to balance her music career with her relationship with newly sober Gunnar (Sam Palladio). Meanwhile, Deacon (Charles Esten) is still struggling with the loss of his wife and trying to be there for his young daughter.
As always, music plays a central role in the episode. We are treated to a number of new original songs, including a duet between Rayna and her longtime collaborator, guitarist extraordinaire Deacon. We also get a glimpse of Juliette's music as she navigates her comeback.
All in all, "The Wayfaring Stranger" is a strong season premiere that sets the stage for what's to come. While fans may miss Connie Britton's presence, the show proves that it still has plenty of interesting storylines and compelling characters that will keep viewers tuning in.
