Our Zoo is a British television drama series based on a true story of how a family set up a zoo during the 1930s, in the face of economic instability and social upheaval. The show premiered on BBC One in September 2014. The series revolves around the Mottershead family, led by George Mottershead (played by Lee Ingleby), a war veteran and passionate animal lover. After witnessing the miserable conditions of the animals at the Chester Zoo, George sets out to create a zoo where animals can live in spacious enclosures amidst natural surroundings.

Undeterred by financial constraints and bureaucratic hurdles, George and his family struggle to make their dream a reality. They acquire a piece of land in Upton by Chester and begin their enterprise with a few animals such as a lioness, a bear, a chimpanzee, and some monkeys. Initially ridiculed by skeptics and criticized by neighbors, the Mottersheads confront a range of challenges in their mission to establish a successful and ethical zoo.

The family's story is anchored by various subplots featuring conflicts, personal tribulations, and heartwarming moments. For instance, there is Lizzie Mottershead (played by Liz White), George's wife, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after her experiences nursing soldiers during the war. Her condition causes some tension in her relationship with George, who is supportive but frustrated at times.

Another subplot features Mew, the chimpanzee acquired by the Mottersheads, who becomes a beloved member of the family, sparking a sense of connection and affection between humans and animals. Meanwhile, the zoo attracts visitors from all walks of life, including children, scientists, and animal enthusiasts, who are captivated by the rare and exotic creatures on display.

Throughout the first season, the Mottersheads grapple with various challenges, including financial instability, animal welfare concerns, public health scares, and sabotage efforts. There are also a few characters who stand in opposition to the zoo, such as the town councilor Mr. Langley, who wants to shut down the operation due to his prejudices against animals and immigrants.

The show also touches upon themes such as relationships, identity, and societal norms. For instance, one of the Mottershead children, Rupert, is a creative and sensitive boy who struggles to fit into the rigid expectations of his school and peers. Similarly, George's sister Muriel (played by Anne Reid), an unmarried woman in her forties, challenges the gender roles and social hierarchy of the time. Her bond with Lizzie and her support for the zoo demonstrate how familial ties can transcend societal barriers.

One of the standout aspects of Our Zoo is the production design, which authentically recreates the ambiance and aesthetics of England in the 1930s. The costumes, sets, and props have a vintage charm that adds to the overall immersion of the show. Moreover, the soundtrack, composed by Neil Davidge, complements the emotional beats of the story, evoking a sense of nostalgia, hope, and wonder.

Overall, Our Zoo is a heartwarming and entertaining series that showcases the resilience and passion of a family who dared to pursue their dreams. The talented cast brings their characters to life with nuance, humor, and heart, while the writing and direction create a compelling narrative that engages both adult and younger viewers. The show is a testament to the enduring appeal of stories of human-animal relationships and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
