Madoka Kaname and her friend Sayaka Miki fulfill their promise to help the alien-like creature, Kyubey, on his mission by becoming magical girls. They learn about the risks of using their powers to fulfill their deepest wishes as they encounter the witch, Familiars, who they must defeat in order to continue their mission. Kyubey also introduces a new magical girl, Homura Akemi, who seems to know more about the dangers of being a magical girl than she lets on. As the trio faces difficult decisions and battles, Madoka starts to question if it's truly worth it to become a magical girl and the consequences that come with it.
