In the second episode of Queen Sugar, titled "Evergreen," we see the Bordelon siblings continuing to come to terms with their father's unexpected death and the inheritance of his sugarcane farm in Louisiana. Charley (played by Dawn-Lyen Gardner), the eldest sister, struggles to adapt to life in the small town of Saint Josephine, as she tries to navigate her troubled marriage and take on the task of managing the sugarcane farm. Meanwhile, Nova (played by Rutina Wesley), the middle sister, grapples with the decision to publish an exposé on the local police department's corruption. Lastly, Ralph Angel (played by Kofi Siriboe), the youngest sibling, faces the challenge of becoming a single father to his son, Blue (played by Ethan Hutchison), while trying to obtain his share of the inheritance to better provide for his son. Throughout the episode, we see each sibling struggling to find their footing as they adjust to their new lives and responsibilities. However, they each receive support from unexpected sources. Charley finds comfort in the newly-hired farmhands, a group of women who not only help her manage the farm but also provide her with emotional support. Nova begins to rekindle a relationship with her high school sweetheart, but also finds herself attracted to a local police officer who may hold important information about her exposé. Ralph Angel's ex-girlfriend, Darla (played by Bianca Lawson), resurfaces and offers to help him with Blue, but he must decide whether or not to trust her again. As the episode progresses, tension builds between the siblings as they struggle with their own personal dilemmas and the pressure of managing the farm together. Nevertheless, the love they share for each other and their father's legacy ultimately brings them closer. "Evergreen" highlights the importance of family, community, and resilience in the face of adversity. The story explores complex themes such as race, class, and gender politics, while also shedding light on the struggles of rural Southern life. The episode ends with a cliffhanger that leaves the audience eager to see what is in store for the Bordelon family in the next installment.
