Her passion for social justice leads her to pursue a story on the use of pesticides, which she discovers are harming not only the crops but also the health of those who work on the farms. As she delves deeper into the issue, Nova faces pushback from both the farmers and the companies responsible for producing these harmful chemicals.

Meanwhile, Charley deals with the aftermath of her brother Ralph Angel's attempted robbery and subsequent arrest. She struggles with the knowledge that he was driven to desperate measures due to financial difficulties, and must find a way to help him and provide for her family's sugar cane farm.
