In the first episode of Rehab Addict: Detroit, entitled "An Opportunity in Detroit," viewers are introduced to host and renovation expert Nicole Curtis as she embarks on a new project in the city of Detroit. After successfully flipping houses in her hometown of Minneapolis, Curtis sets her sights on the Motor City, a once-thriving metropolis that has fallen on hard times.
The episode begins with Curtis and her team scouting out potential properties to renovate, driving around the city's various neighborhoods and taking note of houses that are in especially bad shape. Their first pick is a run-down bungalow in the East English Village area, which Curtis hopes to transform into a beautiful and functional family home.
As soon as she purchases the property, Curtis gets to work tearing out walls and removing debris. One of the biggest challenges she faces is restoring the original plaster walls, which have been covered in layers of wallpaper and paint over the years. Undeterred, Curtis sets to work painstakingly chipping away at the layers of grime and exposing the original plaster underneath.
Throughout the episode, viewers get to see Curtis's hands-on approach to renovation in action. She can often be seen wielding a sledgehammer or climbing up onto the roof to do repairs herself, all while wearing her trademark vintage outfits and cat-eye glasses.
As the renovation progresses, Curtis faces a number of setbacks, including a faulty electrical system and water damage in the basement. However, she refuses to give up and instead doubles down on her efforts to restore the house to its former glory.
One of the most heart-warming moments of the episode comes when Curtis unveils a surprise for her team: a vintage trailer that she has transformed into a mobile office and living space. The trailer is fully furnished with comfortable seating and colorful decorations, and Curtis jokes that it's now her new "home away from home."
Ultimately, Curtis is able to complete the renovation on schedule and on budget. The finished house is stunning, with fresh paint, gorgeous hardwood floors, and a sleek and modern kitchen. Curtis is especially proud of a mural that she's painted on the walls of the children's bedroom, which features a whimsical scene of Detroit's skyline.
The episode ends with Curtis selling the house to a young family, who are thrilled to be moving into a neighborhood that is on the upswing. Curtis remarks that she's excited to be a part of the transformation of Detroit, and that she hopes to continue renovating properties in the city for years to come.
