In season 18 episode 103 of Restaurant: Impossible, titled "Back in Business: Al's Seafood," host Robert Irvine travels to Al's Seafood in Maryland to help the struggling restaurant get back on track. Al's Seafood has been a beloved seafood spot for locals and tourists alike for over 40 years, but in recent years, the business has taken a considerable hit. With a dated menu, poor management, and an outdated decor, Al's Seafood is in desperate need of a revamp.
When Robert arrives, he is immediately struck by the stark contrast between the restaurant's exterior, which looks clean and professional, and the interior, which is cluttered and unappealing. He meets owner Cindy, who explains that she and her husband and co-owner, Randy, have been struggling to keep the business afloat since taking over from Cindy's parents a few years ago. Randy is in poor health, and Cindy has been shouldering most of the burden of running the restaurant, but despite her best efforts, Al's Seafood is still struggling.
Robert takes a tour of the kitchen and is dismayed to find that the equipment is old and outdated, and that the cooks are struggling to keep up with the demands of the restaurant's menu. He tastes some of the dishes, and finds that the food is uninspired and lacks flavor. He meets with the staff and discovers that communication between the front and back of house is poor, which is causing unnecessary delays and errors. Additionally, the staff is demoralized and disengaged, which is having a negative impact on customer service.
Robert decides to tackle the decor first, enlisting the help of his design team to create a fresher, more modern look for the restaurant. He then meets with the kitchen staff to develop a new menu that highlights fresh seafood and local ingredients. He encourages Cindy to take a more active role in managing the restaurant, and enlists Randy's help in improving the equipment and operations in the kitchen. Together, they work to improve communication and morale among the staff, and to overhaul the restaurant's systems and procedures.
Throughout the episode, Robert faces a number of challenges, including resistance from some of the staff, disagreements among the owners, and unexpected setbacks during the renovation process. Despite these obstacles, he remains focused and determined to help Al's Seafood get back on track.
In the end, Robert unveils the newly renovated restaurant to Cindy, Randy, and the staff, who are all thrilled with the results. The new decor is fresh and inviting, the menu is full of delicious new dishes, and the staff is energized and motivated. The customers are equally impressed, and the restaurant sees a significant increase in business. Robert leaves feeling confident that Al's Seafood is back in business, and ready to thrive for years to come.
