The story follows along in December of 1775 as Cletus Moyer (played by Brooks) is free as a colonial America Northerner. He works with an Underground Railroad to assist slaves to escape. Just before Christmas, at Spotsylvania County, Virginia bounty hunters capture Moyer at the Parker Plantation.

Due to the capture, slaves in the dozens who have escaped the plantations are in danger of being recaptured. Moyer asks two slaves from the Reynolds Plantation to replace him. Involved in the caper is Kunta Kinte (played by Burton), a 20 year old Mandinka who had been captured in Gambia and the Fiddler (played by Gossett), an elderly slave. Kunta has agreed to assist so that he can also escape. However, Fiddler is not willing to be involved, fearing the consequences.

Moyer and two other slaves are hanged on Christmas Eve after slave uprising is unsuccessful. This prompts Fiddler to go ahead and assist Kunta to lead the charge to free the slaves.

While the two are successful in leading the runaway slaves through to the river boat, only one can go due to a lack of room. They both decide to stay because neither one can bear to go and leave the other.

This forces them to make an excuse for leaving to return to Parker plantation. Fiddler and Kunta are satisfied that they were able to help some fellow slaves to become free - as the best Christmas gift ever possible.
