Tom Hanks brings his comedic chops to the Saturday Night Live stage as host of season 11, episode 5. Joining him as the musical guest is the smooth and sultry Sade.
In this episode, viewers are treated to a variety of sketches that spoof popular culture at the time, such as a send-up of the then-popular game show "Jeopardy!" In this sketch, Hanks plays a bumbling contestant who fails to answer even the simplest questions, while the other contestants effortlessly rack up the points.
Another standout sketch features Hanks as a member of a group of superheroes who have a particularly weird and useless set of powers, such as the ability to talk to plants or to create a small amount of steam from their fingertips. Despite their lackluster abilities, the heroes are called into action to save the day, leading to a comical and chaotic showdown with the forces of evil.
Other sketches in the episode include a parody of the popular sitcom "Cheers," featuring Hanks as a patron who can't seem to get enough of the bar's famous wings, and a send-up of the then-popular film "Platoon," in which Hanks plays a grizzled sergeant who tries to motivate his troops with increasingly bizarre pep talks.
As for the musical guest, Sade brings her signature soulful sound to the SNL stage, performing some of her most beloved hits, including "Smooth Operator" and "When Am I Going To Make A Living."
Overall, season 11, episode 5 is a fine example of the type of irreverent and often absurd humor that Saturday Night Live is known for. With Tom Hanks and Sade both at the top of their game, viewers are in for a wild and entertaining ride.
