Buck Henry, writer of The Graduate and co-creator of Get Smart, hosts this episode of Saturday Night Live with musical guest Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The episode opens with a sketch parodying the television show Soul Train, featuring cast member Garrett Morris as host Don Cornelius. Other sketches include a parody of the NBC game show Password, with Buck Henry as a clueless contestant and John Belushi as a loud-mouthed celebrity partner. In "The Bees," Henry plays a hapless beekeeper who struggles to control his bees while trying to impress a female reporter. Another sketch features Bill Murray as a man who fakes his own death to avoid paying a debt, only to have his plan backfire. The show also features a segment called "Weekend Update," in which cast member Jane Curtin delivers fake news stories with politically charged commentary. In the musical performances, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" off their album Damn the Torpedoes, which had just been released the previous month. The episode closes with Buck Henry signing off and thanking the audience for tuning in.
