An annual 200-mile snowmobile race across the frozen tundra of western Alaska means troopers have their hands full. Between the high speeds and rugged terrain, it's no surprise that they're called into action when racers are injured in a crash. As many Alaskans are gun owners, tensions between neighbors can quickly elevate, and troopers respond to calls of shots fired. Even in the rural villages, bullet holes in government buildings serve as an ever-present reminder of the danger troopers face.
