Zorn, a hulking warrior from a faraway island chain, returns to the suburbs of Orange County, California, where he thinks his wife and teenage son still live. In reality, his wife Edie has moved on, and Zorn is shocked to learn that his son, Alangulon, or "Alan" for short, is a skinny, socially awkward high school sophomore who bears little resemblance to him. Even worse, Zorn learns that Edie has a fiancé, Craig, a mild-mannered online psychology professor, who is determined to be a good father to Alan.
After some initial awkwardness, Zorn decides to stay in Orange County to try to reconnect with Alan and win back Edie. However, he quickly finds that his aggressive, macho warrior ways clash with the mundane realities of suburban life. He also has trouble getting along with Alan, who is embarrassed by his father's "weirdness" and lack of social skills.
Throughout the episode, Zorn tries to impress Alan by taking him out on a "manly" adventure, which involves fighting off a group of deer and stealing a video game from a convenience store. Meanwhile, Edie struggles to balance her loyalty to Zorn with her growing feelings for Craig, who seems to be a better fit for her and Alan. At the same time, Zorn's old enemy, a rival warrior named Headbutt Man, arrives in Orange County and begins causing trouble for him.
The episode combines live-action with animation, as Zorn moves back and forth between the real world and his own animated homeland, where he is a hero and a king. The animation segments are filled with over-the-top action and fantasy elements, including giant monsters, magical swords, and flying griffins. These sequences provide a fun contrast to the more mundane scenes of Zorn struggling to fit in with his family and neighbors.
Overall, "Return to Orange County" sets up the premise of the show and establishes the main characters and their relationships. The episode is filled with humor, action, and heart, as Zorn tries to figure out how to be a good father and husband in a world that doesn't always make sense to him.
