Start-Ups: Silicon Valley is about six tech entrepreneurs who are trying to make it big in Silicon Valley, the tech industry hub in the United States. In season 1, episode 2, titled "Awkward," tensions rise between the startups as they compete for investors and attention. Sarah's app, My Mobile Menu, is struggling to get traction and her team is feeling the pressure. Meanwhile, Dwight and Kim are working on their startup, Fashion Forward, and are also starting to feel the heat.
The episode opens with Sarah and David getting into a heated argument about the direction of the app. Sarah feels like My Mobile Menu isn't catching on because David isn't putting enough effort into marketing the product. David thinks the app's design is the biggest problem. The argument ends with Sarah storming off, frustrated with David's lack of support.
At Fashion Forward, Dwight and Kim are struggling to come up with a name for their startup. They've decided to pivot from their initial idea and are now creating an app that uses artificial intelligence to help people find fashion inspiration. They're excited about the idea but can't seem to agree on a name. Their tempers start to flare, and they end up arguing over the color of a chair in their office.
Meanwhile, Ben and Hermione, who are working on their social media startup, Ignite, are feeling good about their progress. They've landed an important meeting with a venture capitalist and are preparing their pitch. Their confidence is shaken, however, when they see Sarah's team in the lobby. It turns out that Sarah and David are also meeting with the same venture capitalist. The tension is palpable as both startups try to impress the investor.
Later, the group attends a networking event where Sarah and David both try to drum up interest in My Mobile Menu. Sarah tries to get advice from Hermione, but Hermione is dismissive, telling her that Ignite is already way ahead of her. Sarah is hurt and frustrated but doesn't give up. She continues to pitch her app to anyone who will listen.
The next day, Dwight and Kim finally settle on a name for their startup: StyleUp. They're excited about the progress they're making and are looking forward to pitching their idea to investors. However, when they present their idea to a group of potential investors, they don't get much traction. The investors are skeptical about the use of artificial intelligence in the fashion industry and aren't convinced that the app will catch on.
The episode ends with the startups still struggling to get their ideas off the ground. Sarah is feeling discouraged about the lack of interest in My Mobile Menu, but she's not giving up. Dwight and Kim are starting to feel the pressure of trying to create something new and innovative, and Ben and Hermione are still unsure if they've hit on a winning idea. The episode leaves the viewer wondering if any of the startups will make it big.
