Ep 6. Hank Hallucinates

  • July 25, 2013

Hank has always been one of the most entertaining characters on Sullivan & Son, and in this episode, he takes center stage. Hank Hallucinates sees Hank getting a little too carried away with painkillers after a recent injury, and as a result, he starts to have some pretty wild hallucinations.

The episode starts off with Steve and Owen trying to get Hank to stop taking so many painkillers. He's just had a minor surgery, and he's convinced that he needs the pills to function. Steve tells him that he needs to stop, but Hank insists that he's fine. Meanwhile, Roy is dealing with his own problems. He's been trying to build up the courage to ask out a woman he's interested in, but he can't seem to get the words out. Steve and Owen try to give him some advice, but Roy isn't very receptive.

As Hank's hallucinations become more intense, the other characters start to get dragged into his imaginary world. At first, it's just little things - Hank keeps mistaking Steve for a giant rabbit, for example. But soon enough, everyone is seeing things that aren't really there. Roy starts to see the object of his affection everywhere he goes, but every time he tries to talk to her, she disappears. Owen has a lengthy conversation with an empty table, and Steve finds himself in a bizarre, Dr. Seuss-style world.

Despite the silly nature of the episode, there are some surprisingly poignant moments. As the gang navigates Hank's hallucinations, they start to confront their own issues and insecurities. Roy eventually realizes that he's been sabotaging himself in his love life, and he decides to take some real risks. Owen, who has always struggled with social anxiety, finds that talking to an inanimate object is surprisingly therapeutic. And even Steve, who is usually the calm, collected voice of reason, gets to indulge in a little bit of fantasy.

Of course, the episode is also full of plenty of comedic moments. The sight of Hank bouncing around the bar on a toy horse is enough to elicit laughs, as is Roy's ongoing quest to talk to the woman of his dreams. There are also some great one-liners and visual gags throughout the episode.

Overall, Hank Hallucinates is a fun, lighthearted episode of Sullivan & Son. While it doesn't advance any major plotlines, it does offer a chance to explore the characters in a new way. And who doesn't love a good hallucination sequence?
