Inside UPS Worldport, the sixth episode of Super Factories season 1, takes viewers into the largest fully automated package sorting facility in the world. Located in Louisville, Kentucky and spanning over 5.2 million square feet, Worldport is the hub of UPS's global package delivery system.

Throughout the episode, viewers are introduced to the complex process of moving packages through the facility, which includes loading and unloading airplanes, scanning packages, and sorting them by destination. The package sorting process is largely automated, with robots and conveyors handling the majority of packages. This allows for a staggering 416,000 packages to be sorted per hour.

We see the process from the beginning as trucks deliver packages, and are sorted into individual shipping containers for transportation to the aircraft. Each container is loaded onto a conveyor belt and it is then scanned which is followed by the movement of the package through the facility.

Viewers are taken behind the scenes to see how the systems work and the infrastructure of the Worldport facility. UPS's sophisticated tracking system allows each package to be accurately located throughout the facility. And in order to maintain this process accuracy, the facility is maintained around the clock, year-round.

To ensure packages are delivered on time, each package is on the move within 20 minutes of arriving at the sorting facility. The UPS tracking system is then able to follow the package until it reaches the destination. The system integrates the details of the package, total weight, estimated cost, tracking number, and destination. The exact location of the package is updated frequently, sometimes as often as every hour.

In addition to the impressive automation system, viewers also learn about the teamwork required to make Worldport a success. Hundreds of employees work together in a choreographed effort to ensure the packages are sorted and sent to their correct destinations on time. We observe the workers dealing with urgent requests and situations where a package has an issue or is falling behind, resulting in rerouting, redelivery, and resolution in very little time.

Finally, the episode touches upon the history behind UPS and how it has grown into the global corporation it is today. UPS was established in 1907 as a messenger service, and over the years it evolved into a delivery system that spans the globe, including China. Today, UPS delivers over 15 million packages a day in over 200 countries.

Inside UPS Worldport provides a fascinating look at the world of package sorting and transportation. From the advanced automation systems to the hard-working team of employees who keep the facility running smoothly, viewers gain an appreciation of the complexity, efficiency, and dedication required to make sure packages arrive at their destinations on time.
