James Blake is a former professional Tennis player from the United Kingdom who retired in 2013. However, it is not his sports career that brought him to The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, but his recent book - Ways of Grace: Stories of Activism, Adversity, and How Sports Can Bring Us Together. James Blake sat down with Trevor Noah to discuss his new book and how sports can bring about positive social change.
The two began by discussing Blake's experience growing up in the predominantly white community of Fairfield, Connecticut. Blake discusses how tennis, a predominantly white sport, helped him bridge that racial divide and develop a broader perspective on life.
The conversation then moved on to Blake's tennis career, and how he often used his platform to speak out on issues of racial injustice. Blake recounts his experience of being wrongfully arrested and tackled by a police officer in New York City in 2015. Trevor and James discuss the broader implications of such police brutality and the systemic racial discrimination that still exists in America.
Though Blake's book is centered around sports, it covers a wide range of social justice issues, including race, sexuality, and gender. The Daily Show With Trevor Noah episode featuring James Blake is an eye-opening and thought-provoking conversation that highlights the power of sports to bring people together while also shedding light on the social issues that still plague our society.
