The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, a political satire and news show on Comedy Central, aired its 153rd episode of the 2020 season on November 30th, titled "The Daily Social Distancing Show." In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing measures, the episode was filmed and broadcast without a live studio audience.
As with previous episodes, the show began with Trevor Noah's monologue, in which he covered major news stories of the day, including the Supreme Court's decision regarding religious gatherings during the pandemic, and the ongoing Trump campaign's legal efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Noah took a critical eye to the conflicting messaging around COVID-19 safety measures and how it has impacted the African American community.
Following the monologue, the show segued into a segment called “Voting in America.” In this segment, correspondent Dulcé Sloan covered how voter suppression has impacted Black Americans in the US. Sloan spoke with the founder of the New Georgia Project, Nse Ufot, and investigated how her fair fight organization tackled voter suppression on the ground. The New Georgia Project is an effort to inform, engage, and register voters of color and underrepresented people organically. She talked about the rampant voter suppression efforts and how it affects Black voters.
The episode then went on to cover the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia. Noah spoke to Ethiopian-American journalist, Zecharias Zelalem, who provided context and updates on the situation in the Tigray region, where thousands have been displaced and have limited access to necessities like food and water.
The show ended with a lighthearted interview with comedian and actor Daveed Diggs, best known for his role in Hamilton on Broadway. Diggs discussed his work on the new animated series “Bob’s Burgers,” as well as his experience with virtual performances during the pandemic.
As always, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah demonstrated its commitment to informed comedy, using satire and humor to engage viewers with important political and social issues. Despite the challenges and changes brought about by the pandemic, the show has continued to deliver insightful commentary and thought-provoking interviews with guests from a variety of industries. Episode 153 was no exception, addressing a range of issues, from voter suppression to global conflicts, while also providing much-needed humor and levity in uncertain times.
