Rob Petrie, a comedy writer for a TV show, is having a rough day. He has a deadline for a script due that evening and can't seem to get any work done. His fiery wife Laura, played by Mary Tyler Moore, has been trying to get him to stop procrastinating and just get the script done, but Rob is struggling.
Just when Rob thinks things can't get any worse, he realizes that he lost his bank book - the one with all of his and Laura's savings in it. Panicked, he searches frantically for it all over the house, but it's nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, Laura has an appointment with a glamorous hairdresser, played by Tina Louise, who convinces her to get a shorter haircut than she's used to. Laura loves it, but when Rob sees it, he is horrified. He can't believe that his beautiful wife has cut her hair so short and worries that she won't be as desirable to him anymore.
As the day goes on, Rob's stress levels continue to rise. He still can't find the bank book and his boss is getting increasingly impatient with him for not having the script done yet. Laura tries to help by calling the bank to see if anyone has turned in the book, but has no luck.
To add insult to injury, Laura's new haircut causes quite a stir at work for Rob. His coworkers can't stop teasing him about it and he feels embarrassed and emasculated.
Just when Rob is about to give up hope and accept the fact that the money is gone forever, he gets a call from the bank. Someone did turn in the book and all of their savings are safe. The relief is palpable and Rob and Laura embrace in happiness.
With the stress of the day behind him and his love for Laura renewed, Rob is finally able to finish the script on time. As the episode ends, he and Laura sit together in bed and read a book, grateful for each other and the life they've built together.
