The Eccentric Family is an anime series that is set in the city of Kyoto and revolves around a family of mythical creatures called Tanuki, who can transform into human form. Season 1 episode 1 "Goddess of the Noryoyuka", introduces viewers to the fascinating world of the Tanuki and the challenges they face living among humans.
The episode starts with an introduction to the Shimogamo family, which includes the father Souichirou, the three sons - Yasaburou, Yaichirou and Yajirou, and a daughter, Yashirou. The family lives in a house on a river bank and enjoys life in their own unique way, spending their time drinking sake, playing pranks on humans, and enjoying their Tanuki form.
The main plot of the episode revolves around the annual "Kaisei" ceremony, which is held in honor of the Goddess of the Noryoyuka, who is said to grant wishes to those who visit her shrine. Yasaburou, the main protagonist of the series, decides to attend the ceremony, despite discouragement from his older brother, Yaichirou.
On his way to the shrine, Yasaburou encounters Benten, a powerful and beautiful woman who is known for her ability to ride on the back of a giant tengu bird. Yasaburou has a deep admiration for Benten, who also happens to be a regular attendee of the Kaisei ceremony.
Upon arriving at the ceremony, Yasaburou meets up with his old friend, a frog named Akadama, who is also a powerful figure in the Tanuki community. Akadama warns Yasaburou about the dangers of being too friendly towards humans, cautioning him to keep his wits about him.
While at the ceremony, Yasaburou witnesses the arrival of Benten, who at first, seems to be disinterested in the festivities. However, as the ceremony progresses, she becomes more involved and even participates in a traditional Tanuki celebration, much to the surprise of the other attendees.
As the night wears on and the ceremony comes to a close, Yasaburou becomes aware of a group of humans who are planning to capture and eat the Tanuki. Horrified by this, Yasaburou reaches out to Benten, hoping she will help to stop the humans.
The episode ends with Benten revealing that she is actually a part of a group of powerful humans, known as the Friday Fellows, who are known for their disregard towards the Tanuki and other mythical creatures.
