Things come to a head when the Chamber of Commerce inspector comes to judge the homes, and both families are determined to win by any means necessary. The Hatrocks even resort to dressing up in Halloween costumes and pretending to be skeletons to scare off the Gruesomes. However, their scheme doesn't end well, and they end up getting chased by the Gruesomes' pet alligator.
In the end, both families realize that their competition has gone too far, and they come together to cheer on the Chamber of Commerce inspector as he judges their neighbors' homes. Although the Hatrocks and the Gruesomes don't win the prize, they learn that it's more important to work together as a community and enjoy the Halloween season together.
