In the historical drama series The Good Lord Bird, a young slave boy is caught up in a bitter fight in 1800s America. The boy is part of a group of soldiers who are fighting against the slave-holding denizens of the South. The series is told from the point of view of Henry Shackleford, a fictional enslaved boy, who is part of John Brown's motley crew of abolitionist soldiers during the time of Bleeding Kansas, eventually participating in the famous 1859 raid on the [U.S.] Army depot at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Brown's raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but was the instigating event that started the American Civil War. The series is produced by and stars actor Ethan Hawke.
