The Jeff Corwin Experience Season 1 Episode 16

Ep 16. In Darwin's Footsteps

  • August 26, 2001

In Darwin's Footsteps is the sixteenth episode of season 1 of The Jeff Corwin Experience. Jeff Corwin explores the Galapagos Islands, where Charles Darwin conducted his research on the origin of species. He starts his journey on Isabela Island, a volcanic island, where he encounters a marine iguana, which is unique to the Galapagos Islands. The iguana is well adapted to the marine environment and can hold its breath for up to 45 minutes. Jeff talks about how Darwin's observations of these iguanas led to his theory of evolution.

Jeff then visits a tortoise sanctuary, where he sees giant tortoises, which can weigh up to 900 pounds. These tortoises can live up to 200 years and are another example of Darwin's theory of evolution, as their shells have adapted to protect them from predators. Jeff meets a conservationist who works at the sanctuary, who explains how they are trying to protect these tortoises from extinction by breeding them in captivity.

Next, Jeff travels to Fernandina Island, where he encounters the Galapagos penguin, the only penguin species found north of the equator. These penguins are well adapted to the warm Galapagos climate, as they can pant to keep cool and molt their feathers twice a year.

Jeff then explores the underwater world of the Galapagos Islands, where he sees a variety of marine life, including hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, and sea lions. He also visits a sea turtle nesting site and witnesses the birth of a baby sea turtle.

Finally, Jeff visits San Cristobal Island, where he talks to local fishermen about the impact of overfishing on the Galapagos ecosystem. He also visits a plant nursery, where they are growing native plants to help restore damaged ecosystems on the islands.

Throughout the episode, Jeff explains how Darwin's observations on the Galapagos Islands led to his theory of evolution and how the unique species on the islands have adapted to their environment over time. He also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect the fragile ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands.
