Patrick Jane and the team at the California Bureau of Investigation are called to investigate the murder of a young girl, whose body was found stuffed in a red box in a landfill. As they investigate the case, they discover that the girl was a drug addict and prostitute, and that she may have been involved with a local drug dealer named Alex.
As Jane and the team look into the case further, they come across a number of suspects, including Alex and two of his associates, a sleazy lawyer and a corrupt cop. However, as they dig deeper, they also uncover a web of lies and deceit, and discover that the murder may be connected to a larger conspiracy involving the drug trade in the area.
Meanwhile, Jane is struggling with his own demons, as he continues to grapple with the death of his wife and daughter. He finds solace in his friendship with FBI agent Sam Bosco, with whom he shares a complicated history. However, when Bosco starts asking questions about Jane's involvement in a case from years earlier, Jane becomes increasingly anxious and defensive.
As the investigation continues, Jane and the team are forced to confront some harsh truths about themselves and the world they live in. They are also forced to make some difficult choices, as they try to bring justice to the victim and her family. In the end, they discover that the truth behind the murder is even more shocking and heartbreaking than they ever could have imagined.
