- September 27, 2017
Your 4-Month-Old Had 2 Broken Legs... Did You Do It? is the eighth episode in the eleventh season of The Steve Wilkos Show. The episode explores the story of a baby who has two broken legs and the investigation into whether their own parents caused the injuries.
As Steve Wilkos opens the show, he introduces the background story by explaining how the parents of the 4-month-old baby girl have been accused of causing the leg injuries. The couple's explanation was that they were in the kitchen cooking when they heard the baby crying in the bedroom. When they went to check on her, they found the child's swollen legs and didn't know how it happened.
Steve brings out the baby's mother, father, and paternal grandfather to get their takes on what happened. The father tells Steve that he saw his daughter moving while she was in her jumper, so he took her out and placed her on the bed. He claims that he didn't notice anything wrong with her legs then, but when he went back to the room, his daughter was crying and her legs were swollen. He explains that they took their baby to the hospital once they noticed the symptoms. The baby's mother offers a similar account, adding that they took the child to see both a pediatrician and a bone specialist for treatment.
The story gets more complex as the baby's maternal grandmother takes the stage. She has accused the child’s mother of being absent through her daughter's infancy and that she was concerned about the baby's wellbeing. She questions the baby's mother about the events that led to the broken legs, and the mother's demeanor becomes more defensive.
Steve also approaches the paternal grandfather, who explains that the family resorted to calling child protective services after the paternal grandmother explained that there were consistent issues with the child's mother's parenting. Even though Steve keeps telling the family members not to interrupt each other, the accusations fly back and forth, becoming heated as they try to pin the blame.
Steve decides to bring out another independent expert to clarify whether the baby’s injuries resulted from negligence or intentional harm. The doctor they bring on the show explains that while child abuse cases are typically treated with caution, in this case, it seemed as though the baby's injuries were due to non-accidental trauma, meaning there was no way someone could have missed it.
The show finally ends with Steve saying that the situation is a clear example of why it's important to be vocal when there's a problem and not hold back. He advises the parents and grandparents to take responsibility and follow the court’s orders as the investigation continues.
