In The Wonder Years season 1 episode 10 titled "Lads and Ladies and Us," we see Kevin, Paul, and Winnie exploring the concept of social circles and gender norms for the first time. The episode opens with Kevin and Paul picking up Winnie from her dance class, where they watch the girls practice ballet. Kevin and Paul make fun of the idea of boys dancing, but Winnie tries to convince them that it's a difficult and athletic pursuit. Kevin and Paul are too wrapped up in their own ideas of masculinity and femininity, however, to see any value in boys dancing.
The main plot of the episode revolves around Kevin's attempt to join a club for boys called The Lads. The club is essentially a group of boys who hang out and play basketball together. Kevin has always been a fan of basketball, so he's excited to join. However, he quickly learns that there are some strict rules he has to follow. For example, he has to wear a specific outfit (a yellow shirt and blue shorts) and can only play a certain way (no fouling!). Kevin initially likes the structure and rules of the Lads group, but he soon realizes that he's missing out on the chance to hang out with Winnie and other girls.
Meanwhile, Winnie is dealing with her own frustrations related to gender expectations. She's excited about a school dance that's coming up, but she's tired of the boys acting like they're doing her a favor by asking her to dance. She decides to take matters into her own hands and asks Kevin to go to the dance as friends, even though they're firmly entrenched in different social circles. Kevin initially balks at the idea, but eventually agrees.
As the dance approaches, Kevin's Lads commitments start to interfere with his plans with Winnie. For example, he has to miss a school assembly in order to attend a Lads meeting. Kevin starts to realize that he's not sure he wants to be part of a group that's so limiting. He also realizes that he doesn't want to miss his chance to connect with Winnie just because he's too stuck in his ways to see beyond traditional gender roles.
As the episode comes to a close, Kevin and Winnie attend the dance together and have a great time. Kevin's glad that he was able to step outside his comfort zone and spend time with Winnie, even if it meant breaking some of the rules of his social circle. Winnie, too, is happy that she was able to take control of her own social life and ask Kevin to the dance on her own terms. The episode ends with the two of them walking home together, reflecting on the fun they had and the potential for future adventures.
