The Woods is a Polish mystery/crime drama television series that premiered on Netflix in 2020. The show is based on Harlan Coben's novel of the same name and is directed by Leszek Dawid. The story revolves around the mystery of the disappearance of four teenagers who went missing in the woods in 1994. In the present day, we see the protagonist, Prosecutor Pawel Kopinski (Grzegorz Damiecki), who is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his sister who had gone missing in those woods 25 years ago.

One day, a new lead comes to light when a body is discovered in those same woods. Pawel becomes involved in the investigation into the identity of the victim and soon discovers that the body is those of his childhood friend, Artur Sadowski, who had also disappeared with his sister. This leads Pawel on a journey to unravel the mystery of what happened to the four missing teenagers in the woods.

As Pawel seeks answers, he reconnects with a former classmate, Laura Goldsztajn (Agnieszka Grochowska), who had also gone missing at the same time but was later found alive. Laura is now a successful surgeon with a painful past and their reconnection leads to a number of implications for both of them.

Pawel also gets involved with a private investigator, Kamila (Wiktoria Filus), who also happens to be the sister of one of the missing teenagers. Kamila is driven by the desire to uncover what happened to her brother and his friends and has spent a significant amount of time and resources on this investigation.

The show is set against the backdrop of post-communist Poland and is brought to life by a talented cast of actors. Grzegorz Damiecki delivers a restrained yet powerful performance, capturing the pain and anguish of a man who has spent more than two decades grappling with the loss of his sister.

Agnieszka Grochowska brings a subtle intensity to her role as Laura, the former classmate and love interest of Pawel. Her character is dark and mysterious, with a troubled past that threatens to consume her every waking moment.

The supporting cast, including Hubert Milkowski as the chief detective tasked with investigating the case, all bring their A-game to the show, delivering well-rounded performances that make the viewers care about their characters and their stories.

The Woods is a well-crafted and engaging mystery that keeps you hooked from start to finish. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot that will keep you guessing until the very end. The show also does an excellent job of exploring the emotional fallout of the characters from the events of 25 years ago, making this more than just a typical crime show.

The cinematography and the production design of the show are top-notch, capturing the essence of post-communist Poland and the beauty and mystery of the forest where the events took place. The show does an excellent job of using the forest as a character in itself, adding to the overall sense of mystery and intrigue.

In conclusion, The Woods is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas and mystery thrillers. The show offers something new and fresh while still being firmly grounded in the genre conventions. With a strong cast, a compelling storyline, and gorgeous production design, this is a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
