The Calusari are a group of Romanian mystics who perform a ritual dance to drive away evil spirits, and who also serve as guides for the dead. They are contacted by Janet who seeks their help in saving her surviving son. They perform a ceremony to cleanse Matthew of the spirits that have been haunting him since his brother's death. However, the ritual seems to have unleashed something even more sinister.
During their investigation, Mulder and Scully discover that this is not the first time the Calusari have been involved in a supernatural case. In fact, a similar ritual was performed in the past that resulted in the bloody death of a small boy. The agents learn that the Calusari believe that the child must be sacrificed to prevent the evil spirits from taking over the souls of the living.
As the investigation continues, strange and terrifying events occur, including the sudden death of a man who is seen by witnesses to be attacked by an invisible force. The agents' investigation leads them to a final confrontation with the Calusari, where they discover that the ritual has indeed summoned a demonic force. Matthew's safety and the fate of everyone involved is at stake as an exorcism must be performed to rid the boy of the evil spirit once and for all.
In this episode, Mulder's ongoing skepticism and Scully's faith in science and reason are tested as they confront an ancient and powerful supernatural force.
